Hikari Wins Good Design Award 2025
On October 15, 2025, the results of the Good Design Award 2025, organized by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion, were announced. The commercial facility Hikari, developed by Becamex Tokyu, was selected as a winner in the "Initiatives" category.
Hikari serves as a commercial facility and a hub for fostering a circular lifestyle. Designed by Japanese architectural firm Takashi Niwa Architects, in collaboration with the sustainable restaurant Pizza 4P’s, the complex proposes and implements a circular ecosystem of food and materials.
The facility was highly praised for both its architectural and operational aspects as a commercial space. Under its core concept, "Made to Enlighten", the project was recognized for its meaningful environmental efforts, thoughtful design, and overall experience - where visitors can learn about the circulation of food and materials while enjoying the process.
Design Highlights
1. Circular, walkable landscape with an aquaponics pond at the center, surrounded by food and beverage tenants, creating a relaxing, open space integrated into the urban environment.
2. Practical implementation of sustainable resource circulation, including composting organic waste, raising edible fish, using pond water for irrigation, planting fruit tree-lined paths and incorporating circular/recycled materials into the interior design.
3. Ongoing workshops held in collaboration with residents and elementary schools in the area, offering opportunities to learn, experience, and share knowledge about circular food and material systems.
Jury’s Evaluation
In Binh Duong New City, a symbolic commercial facility has been created by combining organically shaped volumes with a circular ecosystem. A walkable landscape surrounds the central pond, where tenants’ organic waste is composted, and the harvested fruits and pond-raised fish are served at events. The pizza restaurant features interiors made from a variety of recycled materials.
Thus, although it functions as a commercial facility, this is also an experimental project that provides a space where local residents and children can enjoyably learn about food and material cycles.
Becamex Tokyu will continue its efforts toward building a sustainable, circular urban environment.
